Nominations for RSM President and Council

Nominations are now being sought for the next President of the Society. The term of office of the President is three years. Any Fellow nominated should be of good standing in the Society, and must have been a Fellow continuously for at least five years. Nominations should be submitted on the form and returned by 12 noon on Thursday 28 March 2013. In the event that more than one candidate is nominated for the role of President, an election will be held. Those eligible to vote are the Trustees of the Society, of whom twelve are voted for by the Fellowship, and up to six co-opted by the Council. The successful candidate will take up post as President-elect on 1 October 2013, and will be installed as President (for three years) at a Ceremony on 15 July 2014. All nominees, proposers and Seconders for President must be Fellows of the Society. Candidates will be invited for an informal discussion during the first two weeks of April 2013.

Nominations are also being sought for four Members of Council for the 2013/14 Session, one of whom must be a doctor in training. All nominations must be submitted on the appropriate form. All nominees, proposers and seconders for Members of Council must be Fellows of the Society. The term of office is up to four years. Council will then elect individuals to the vacant Honorary Officer posts from amongst its number.

Should an election for Members of Council be necessary, it will be by electronic and postal ballot. Those members without an email address will be sent papers by post. The results of the ballot will be presented to the Annual Meeting of Fellows in July 2013.

I would be grateful if you could ensure that all nominations from Fellows are received by 12 NOON ON THURSDAY 28 MARCH 2013. Nominations received after this date will NOT be considered. All nominations MUST be submitted on the form overleaf only, and should NOT exceed two A4 pages. Nominations will be presented to Council who may decide to add further names. Forms may be sent in electronic format, but must contain all required signatures on one form.

When considering potential candidates for Council, Trustees are conscious of the need to reflect the characteristics of the broader membership and would therefore like to encourage more women to stand for nomination and also to increase the number of younger Fellows on Council. Given the RSM's role in education, individuals with some experience in the field of education and healthcare would be an advantage. Similarly, potential applicants with knowledge in the fields of innovation and the global health agenda are also encouraged.

It is important that all candidates for Council realise that they will have duties as Trustees of the Society. Council members are expected to attend Council meetings and may be asked to sit on other Committees of Council. Council in 2013/14 meets on 5 November 2013, 21 January 2014, 15 April 2014 and 15 July 2014 from 10am. However, these dates and times may be subject to change. Trustees are also required to complete an appraisal form and discuss their feedback with a senior Honorary Officer each year.

Role specifications and guidance can be found below. Nominations must be made on the form and sent to Mrs Joanna Rose to arrive no later than 12 noon on Thursday 28 March 2013.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Sir Michael Rawlins
